A packed gallery saw Texels sell to 600gns for the Reserve Champion at the Annual Cydectin Shearling Show in Saintfield Livestock Mart on Tuesday evening, July 26th 2005.

The first Northern Ireland Texel Sheep Breeders’ Show and Sale of the Season was well judged by Martin Warnock of Limavady with lots bearing rosettes attracting the briskest bidding.

Certainly the Reserve Champion, a Beechvale Judge son from the Springhill Flock of John Foster at Castlederg was the centre of great interest. Saintfield auctioneer Geoffrey Murphy then took the champion, sired by Hillhead Jack of Clubs, and shown by Murray Annett of the Milestone Flock at Rathfriland to 450gns.

Overall the results were;

Cydectin Champion, Murray Annett, Reserve Champion, John Foster.

J & J Wilson 270gs for a Brague I.O.U. son bought by famed sheep shearer Jack Lackey. The Wilson family’s pen topper however made 370gns and another went away for 220gns.

For fellow pedigree breeders however the strong entry of shearling ewes was of particular interest. The number of young faces in the audience reflecting the growing number of new Texel breeders seeking stock. Several seizing their last change to buy Castlenavan ewes from the flock dispersal by Louise Reid. The Seaforde breeder with a strong track record in winning ewe classes having decided to concentrate on her highly successful, but very time consuming, horse training enterprise.

At Saintfield her red rosetted shearling ewe made 310gns and the second placed female from John Watson sold for 300gns.
