Llandovery In Lamb Ewes
The last minute rearrangement of this sale or the ad hoc sale
ring didn’t seem to deter the buyers from Llandovery on the 29th
December 2010.
The sale was dominated by the South West with 47 of the 57 entered
from the Loosebeare, Peacehay and Rowden flocks. Blood from South
Wales however had a major influence in the higher priced lots.
Top of the day was a Cennen Magnum daughter from Loosebeare at
720gns. She was in Lamb to Loosebeare Priceless, a Glendside Nosey
Parker son. Top from Peacehay was another Magnum daughter at 600gns.
Magnum was of course bred by club member Hywel Thomas and was top
price in the 07 NSA sale in Builth. This gimmer was in lamb to
the top price ram from this year’s NSA the 8,200gns Scolton Panther.
He was bred by the Reed family, themselves club members.
Mr Watts’ Rowden flock topped at 400gns for a Haddo Matador daughter
in lamb to Loosebeare Osprey. She would probably have sold even
better had the Ospreys not put 60 points on the Scarlets the day
before!
There were some nice ewes forward by the local vendor’s. Gwyn
Davies’ Trefere flock sold to 380gns for a Glenside Okey-Dokey
daughter in lamb to Trefere Morris II. Keith Evans sold his Scurlage
Castle gimmer by Trujim Newsboy and in lamb to Aman Karwyn to Club
Chair Trudy Davies for 310gns. These two gimmers especially looked
cheap in the company to be fair.
Members are reminded of the club meeting at the White Hart, Llandeilo
on the 10/1/11.
South Wales Club Dinner 2010
The Club’s annual dinner on the 29th October saw a departure from
tradition. In place of the usual after dinner speaker (Bernard Llewellyn
of Carreg Cennen Castle being taken ill on the day) the club entertained
themselves with a quiz. The quizmaster was James Davies (Trujim)
and the club were put through their paces with 30 questions on general
knowledge and agriculture. Former Society Board member Graham Jones
won the quiz for his table in a tense tie breaker with the table
of another former Board member Eirwyn Morgan.
Club Chair Trudy Davies
(Trujim) handed out the prizes from the flock competition held
in July. Champion and first placed large flock went to Madge Morgan
(Tynewydd).

Taking the best intermediate flock and the new award for the best
stock tup were John and Gloria Davies (Aman). They were awarded
the cup for Thinacres Ottowa, a tup bought by them from Lanark.

Gloria was also awarded the Club person of the year award. Gloria
is always ready with her camera at Club functions and many of the
photos that have appeared on these reports in the past few years
were taken by her.

Sweeping up the rest of the awards on offer; the best small flock
and the award for the best gimmers were Des and Irena Lewis (Einon).

Finally a raffle was held in aid of the Air Ambulance and Trudy
Davies was very grateful to Alfryn Davies (Ifan Ddu) for all of
his assistance in that regard.
The club now look forward to the in lamb sale at Llandovery in
December.
Llandovery Sale 2010
TYNEWYDD TOPS
The Morgan family (Tynewydd) caused quite a stir at Llandovery
on the 3rd of September at the South Wales Club sale. For the first
time in many years a ram lamb topped the trade at 900gns. Their
lamb, Tynewydd Rameses, was a late sub by Arkle Pacific out of
a Lyonshall Irish dam. Club Vice Chairman Hywel Davies (Tyrcan)
tapped him in as his Champion and he sold to local Limousin breeder
Handel “Sgt” Rees, Gellysifor, Llandybie (Seevor). [report]
MOST POPULAR RAM SAFARI YET
The 5th annual ram safari of the South
Wales Club on Sunday 8th August 2010 was the best attended yet;
so much so that the Red Lion, Llangors had difficulty in dealing
with the demand for food at its conclusion! [report]
SOUTH WALES CLUB TRIP 2010
The South Wales Club members have just returned from their annual
trip, but the discussions of what they saw will continue for a
long time yet. Trudy Davies (Trujim), freshly appointed Club Chairman
arranged a trip to Yorkshire and South Cumbria on the 11th to the
13th of June. [report]
ROYAL WELSH 2010 ROUND UP
Monday at the Royal
Welsh Show saw a South Wales Club member take
the all Wales flock competition championship for only the third
time. Again it was Deri Morgan (Tynewydd) that took the honour.
He headed the South Wales competition with his fourth consecutive
win in the large flock section. It was also a successful day for
the Davies family (Aman). Having taken a year off, they stormed
back to take the cup for the intermediate flock section for the
second time and the new accolade for the best stock tup with Thinacres
Ottowa. He is by Didcot Navigator out of a Douganhill Jaguar dam.
Taking the two remaining cups, for the small flock section and
best gimmers was Irena Lewis (Einon) who also flew the flag for
the Club in the show. Viewed by 30 Northern Ireland club members
over on a visit she was awarded the special prize for the best
group of three and came second to the Champion and Reserve Champion
with her gimmer and aged ewe respectively.
DJJ Watkins and Co (Cwmcerrig) took the reserve group of three
and 3rd prize shearling tup with Rascarrell Peppermint. He is a
Templand Megane son and was bought by them from the Welsh Premier
sale. Jon and Bridget Booker also did well with their 4th and 5th
placed aged tups Banc Olive Obie One and Bronallt On A Mission,
especially since they are in the middle of a house move. Club Chairman
Trudy Davies and husband Jim were there or thereabouts in many
classes also.
