SOUTH WALES RAM SAFARI 2011
14th August 2011
This year’s ram safari took in some of the most iconic places on the Welsh landscape;
Llangors Lake, the Brecon Beacons, the Rhondda Valley, the Gower and Gorsddu
Terrace, Penygroes. It was pleasing that over 30 members attended this year’s
event including three of the club’s youngest members.
We started within sight of Llangors Lake and in the shadow of
the Beacons at 9.00am. Arkle Pacific Star has left a strong run
of yearlings of both sexes for Deri Morgan at Tynewydd and selection
of his well grown lambs are bound for Welshpool.

After a drive through stunning scenery we arrived at Davicia and
David Meek. David’s Muiresk ewe has come up trumps again, this
time combining with Kelso Picasso. Davicia Spot On is his pen leader
for Worcester and has length, skin and character.

Keith Evans’ Haltcliffe Pheonix took second place in the stock
tup section in this year’s South Wales flock competition. Shortly
thereafter Keith lost him. However his legacy is Scurlage Castle
Sceptre, a breedy tight skinned lamb out of a Clougher Lancelot
dam entered for Welshpool.

After a bite of lunch it was back to the coal measures and Ifan
Ddu. Alfryn manages to produce the goods against all the odds and
had a stunning pair of Aman Paradwys gimmers to display. Triplets
out of a Tophill Kiwi ewe they are heading to Llandovery for the
Club Sale.

John and Gloria Davies welcomed their guests for the 6th consecutive
year. Generating most interest at Aman, was Aman Swynol and his
embryo brother by Cowal Monarch of the Glen entered for Carlisle.
Both are embryo sons of a Tophill Kiwi ewe and are all about backends.
A pair of her Knock Nugget daughters heading to Worcester were
also seen.

Jon and Bridget Booker are part way through moving home, but despite
this turmoil have produced a strong run of shearlings entered to
the NSA in Builth and Club sale in Llandovery. The shearlings were
by Banc Olive Obie One and Bronallt on a Mission. Lengthy lambs
by Obie One son Banc Olive Pistol Pete were also seen together
with Banc Olive Shankley, a strong lamb by Claybury Regard out
of a Lyonshall Lobster dam heading to Welshpool.

The main attraction at Einon with Des and Irena lewis is of course
their famous show team. A strong son of interbreed champions Glenside
Royal Welsh and their successful Tophill ewe is entered to Welshpool.
They also have a half dutch lamb entered to the Builth NSA by a
Greenwood tup which catches the eye.

The marathon ended with Jim and Trudy Davies. They certainly had
a contender for the best lamb seen of the day with Trujim Silver
Dollar, a Tophill Regal son out of a Kelso Nectar dam. He has a
striking head, good skin and a back end to match and is bound for
Worcester.
