2008 off to a flying start with high quality progeny show entries

The Club assembled for its first function of 2008 at the annual progeny show held in Llandovery Mart on 3rd May. Judge Brian Joseph of the Waen Flock had travelled from the Shropshire borders and despite the enforced absence of those from the eastern quarter of the club’s area, he was pleased with the quality of the stock before him. “It’s good to see the quality of stock being produced here which should give members of the South Wales Club confidence for the forthcoming sales season, especially if freedom to purchase at sales further a-field is curtailed” said Mr Joseph in his response to club Chairman Gwyn Davies’ (Trefere) vote of thanks.

A new name will be engraved on the cup this year with past Chairman Gwynfor Richards of the Ynysau flock taking the honours. Talfryn Davies (father of Alfryn, Ifan DDu) in the background tried his best to get out of the way when the photograph was being taken, but found himself trapped!

Gwynfor had brought out three quality pairs of gimmers. He took top spot and second place in the toughest class of the evening. His champions were daughters of Crookholm Looks Like Trouble. Purchased by the Richards family in Lanark 2005, this tup is by Hexel King Billy (grandson of Claybury Invader, a Lanark Champion) and out of a ewe by Glenside His Nibs. This tup has certainly left daughters with sparkle and the character and this gave them the edge according to the judge. “There are a lot of strong contenders in this class, but these two have smart heads and the shape to go with them”. Gwynfor’s second placed pair of gimmers was by Heyworth Lodge Maxim. By Templand Limited edition and out of an ewe by Haddo Index, a Hercules son, Gwynfor had picked him up in Lanark for under a thousand guineas. Gwynfor had seen the potential in the tup and these two were long, strong gimmers with excellent hind quarters. In third place were the most consistent high achievers in this competition over the past few years, Trudy and Jim Davies (Trujim) with daughters of their homebred tup Lionel. He is by the sire of previous progeny show winner Deveronvale Kilroy and out of a Drum Major daughter of their Hillhead foundation ewe. One of the pair was the 8th placed ewe lamb in last year’s Royal Welsh Show. She had wintered well and had the same blend of character and shape that had marked out the champions. However it seemed her companion may not have been strong enough for the pair to overcome Gwynfor Richards’ pairs.

Dominating the three remaining classes, taking five of the seven available prizes, were those other consistent progeny show contenders DJJ Watkins & Co of the Cwmcerrig flock. They took the top two spots in the group of five gimmers with the progeny of their 2006 purchases. In first were five shapely daughters of Baltier Miles Better, a son of Claybury Legacy (stock tup at Knock) out of a Hercules daughter. A 3,000gns purchase from Worcester he has already made a mark on their flock and that of the co-owners the Davies family of the Aman flock. They displayed the same trademark conformation which meant the his sons were placed in the top three of the MLC class at all three mainland Premier Sales last year. Miles better also sired the 3rd place pair of lambs for the Watkins family. Their Lanark purchase of 2006, the 2,600gns Glenside McCoist sired the second placed group of gimmers. He is by Castlecairn Keltic Star out of a His Nibs ewe.

In the lamb classes there was an unique achievement for the Watkins family in that the same sire took the honours in the pair and group classes. Rowland and Reuben Watkins had been in Lanark 2006 when a number of flocks brought forward sons of Clinterty Las Vegas. They together with the Davies family were the under bidders on one, the 13,000gns Templand Megane. In 2007 semen from the Las Vegas, a son of the 52,000gns Baltier King out of an Ettrick High Jinks Craighead ewe came onto the market and a few straws were snapped up by Rowland. The consistency of the lambs by him brought out by Rowland and Gina Watkins on the night was impressive and they certainly carried the heads of character that Mr Joseph required.

Mirroring the unique brace was a brace of second places for Gwyn and Hazel Davies, Caebetran. Their tremendously shaped and fresh group of five 6 week old lambs were a credit to them and their sire Teilo Nantlais. Gwyn had been on the South Wales Ram Safari in 2007 and had spotted the Teilo lamb which took third place in the MLC class at Worcester by Baltier Miles Better. When his buying partner, immediate past Chairman Deri Jones arrived at Worcester with him however he decided that he liked his pen mate the better and the pair secured Nantlais for 1,200gns. A half brother to Teilo Matholwch (5,000gns Lanark) and Teilo Mathonwy (sold privately to the Ettrick flock) Nantlais is by Aman Llengfilwr out of a Cambwell Jake ewe. Gwyn and Hazel were the meat in a Cwmcerrig sandwich in the pair class, securing second with two by Claybury Loyalist. Loyalist had been placed champion in the very same shed in the Welsh Premier sale 2005. A half brother to 14,000gns Claybury Jaguar he is by Haddo Kenny out of an Annan Gold Digger Penstones ewe.

As always this was also a social event, a chance to renew bonds after the varied experiences of lambing. The food provided by the Club Ladies was hailed by Brian Joseph as the “best food in Texels, as usual”. But again here the last word goes to the Watkins family “I particularly liked the fruit” quite apt for a progeny show don’t you think?

South Wales Club at the Welsh Winter Fair

Eurwyn Richards, Grandson of Gwynfor and Bethan Richards of the Ynysau flock, Pumpsaint, Carmarthenshire swept all before him in the 2007 Welsh Winter Fair held at Builth Wells at the end of November.

Young Eurwyn beat off many experienced shepherds to take the supreme carcass championship.

Eurwyn is photographed receiving his cup from the show president as Club Chairman Gwyn Davies (Trefere) looks on.
