on the Welsh landscape; Llangors Lake, the Brecon Beacons, the

pleasing that over 30 members attended this year’s event including

South Wales Club - Royal Welsh round up 2011
Monday
Roger Strawbridge Tamnamoney kicked off the judging at 9.00am.
There was an intermittent niggling drizzle rather than the rain
forecasted thankfully.
In the aged ram class Haymount Prime Star from Royal Welsh stalwarts,
the Williams Family (Caron) took second spot. He is by Castlecairn
Nairobi King out of a Baltier Kracker dam. Penparc President (by
Mellor Vale Masterpiece) from Powell and Marion Jones (Llanthomas)
was placed third and Rascarrell Pepermint (by Templand Megane)
from DJJ Watkins and Co (Cwmcerrig) was fourth. These two rams
had been third and fourth as shearlings but on that occasion were
placed the other way around. In this year’s shearling ram class
Glyn Williams (Padest) stood first until the very last moment with
Carran Rising Star (by Kelso Oxygen) but ended up taking second.
Jim and Trudy Davies (Trujim) had 6th in a strong ram lamb class
with their son of Livery Predator.
In the females, the aged ewe class was again a successful class
for club members. Two ewes from Irena Lewis (Einon) were third
and fifth only separated by Heulwen Thomas a regular winner of
this class over the years. The third placed ewe was interbreed
champion form Aberystwyth Show, a Tophill ewe by Straidarran Maverick.
The fifth placed ewe was homebred and by Trujim Nighthawk. Trujim
themselves picked up another 6th with their Trujim Lionel daughter
who has such a strong record at this show. The Williams family
Caron were placed 7th in the gimmer class with a homebred gimmer.
Will Davis (Twyn Y Cryn) picked up a 5th prize in the ewe lambs
with his daughter of Castlecairn Keltic Star.
After the showing was over the flock competition results were announced:

Champion Flock – Trujim
Jim and Trudy were praised by All Wales Judge Brian Joseph, who
stated that Trujim Nighthawk was the best stock tup he had seen
during the judging. The All Wales Champion however was Heulwen
Thomas Bryn Garth, capping a wonderful day for her following her
breed champion rosette.
Tuesday
The annual “Club Day” on the Texel stand this time saw a change
of tack with live sheep the subject of the competition. They were
a pair of ewe lambs with their June born lambs at foot. The object
of the competition was to guess the combined weight of the lambs
and the breed of their mothers. The two five week old lambs weighed
in at an impressive 55.4k combined. Their mothers were Whitefaced
Woodland x Texel and I’m sure their breeder Adrian Windsor (Fern)
won’t mind me saying that the second cross Texel lambs were a significant
improvement on their mothers in terms of conformation. They displayed
that ours is a breed that can work well when crossed with ANY other,
even rare hill breeds like the Woodlands. When the weight of the
young lambs was announced, one prominent Texel breeder was even
heard to remark that the Texel x Woodland would probably work very
well as an embryo recipient!
Over a hundred people entered the
competition, forty of whom requested catalogues for the Animax
South Wales Club sale to be held at Llandovery on 2/9/11. The winner
drawn from the 6 correct entries and winning a £50 voucher towards
a ram from the Club Sale was Phil Houdley, Gloucestershire.

Pepermint Pipps Progeny Parade
In one of the strongest competitions yet, 18 pairs of lambs were
entered in this year’s competition at Llandovery. It was a pair
of gimmers by Rascarrel Pepermint forward by DDJ Watkins and Co
(Cwmcerrig) that took the championship though. [more]
NSA Welsh Sheep Event 2011
On the Club stand at the Machynlleth event, were the winning entries
from the Progeny show, two Rascarrel Pepermint gimmers from DJJ
Watkins & Co (Cwmcerrig). There were also 4 well grown shearling
tups from the Reed Family (Scolton). They of course took the top
price of 8,200gns at the NSA sale in Builth last year with their
shearling and averaged over 1,200gns for 36. Finally there were
two Welsh Mule X Texel gimmers from the Davies family (Aman) got
out of Thinacres Ottowa, the best stock tup in the South Wales
flock competition 2010.
Most importantly however (and tying everything
into the message) were the photos of the supreme champion pair
and supreme champion single carcass from the Welsh Winter Fair
2010 from Adrian Windsor (Fern) and the reserve champion single
carcass from Gwyn Davies (Caebetran).
