Welcome to www.texel.co.uk - official website of the British Texel Sheep Society Ltd.

Texel Sheep
The British Texel Sheep Society is the UK’s largest pedigree sheep society, based at Stoneleigh Park, home of the Royal Agricultural Society’s Exhibition Centre near Warwick, in the heart of England.

The Texel Breed is famed for its exceptional carcass qualities, which has resulted in the Breed becoming the dominant terminal sire used in the UK. In recent years the Breeds hardiness and recognised survivability has resulted in Hill and Upland producers using Texel Rams to produce store lambs and breeding females which are more marketable than the pure hill breeds that they replace.

Our core business is to provide pedigree registration and marketing services to our 2,200 members in all regions of the United Kingdom of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Today we -

  • birth notify, register and transfer homebred and imported Texels
  • promote British pedigree Texels throughout the UK and beyond
  • organise society sales for pedigree Texels, provide catalogues, reports and statistics, as well as setting the conditions of sale for all sales held under the auspices of the Society
  • encourage membership participation through the regional Club structure and provide a platform for the Clubs to co-operate to the benefit of all members
  • publish an annual journal and bi-monthly news bulletins
  • participate in special sheep events promoting the benefits of commercial usage of the Breed and membership of the Society
  • lobby Government and other institutions on issues affecting members and their Texel sheep

Our task for the future -

  • capitalise on our position in the UK as the dominant terminal sire, increase the breeds usage as a crossing sire and further increase our commercial market share
  • improve existing and develop new services to benefit members
  • modernise and streamline our registration system maintaining cost efficiency and providing greater flexibility
  • research and develop aspects of the Breed to ensure competitiveness in the future
  • provide accurate and meaningful performance data which is easily understood by commercial producers
  • continue to be at the forefront of the sheep industry
  • deliver the practical solutions to members' aspirations
