Members who have flocks based on Welsh premises are eligible for
HCC funding, with financial assistance available for fertility
testing, AI and ET, as well as support for purchases of Performance
Recorded rams.
Dewi Hughes, Industry development Manager for HCC states “funding
opportunities are available through HCC to breeders and commercial
farmers, with closing dates looming for these schemes. Breeders
are encouraged not to leave their application too late to avoid
any disappointment”.
The following press releases offer further information on the schemes

£1,200 funding to help further improve pedigree sheep breeds in Wales
Pedigree sheep breeders are being encouraged to further improve their flocks
through a scheme managed by Hybu Cig Cymru which could see them receive hundreds
of pounds in support.
HCC are providing financial support to encourage the use of Artificial Insemination
(AI) by contributing towards the cost of insemination and also the purchase of
semen from eligible rams.
Breeders can claim up to a maximum of £500 for AI for their flock per year. Support
of up to £700 is also available for Embryo Transfer (ET), a tool that enables
farmers to increase the breeding stock from elite ewes.
“HCC want as many breeders as possible to take advantage of this scheme,” said
Project Executive Dewi Hughes. “Since ET is a more complex and expensive procedure,
pedigree breeders can only apply for this funding once and funding will be supplied
on a first come, first served basis.
For both AI and ET, eligible rams must be in the top 10 per cent in either scan
weight or muscle depth. Rams with maternal ability in the top 25 per cent are
also acceptable.
Funding is also available from HCC for Performance Recording. Terminal breeders
can claim 50 per cent support while maternal breeders can claim 80 per cent with
no limit.
The schemes are managed by HCC and funded through the Rural Development Plan
for Wales. Further details of all the schemes, including how to apply, can be
found on the HCC website – www.hccmpw.org.uk or call HCC on 01970 625050.

Last chance to claim £400 for a top performing ram
Sheep farmers in Wales are reminded that it’s their last chance
to take advantage of a scheme that gives them up to £400 to
help further improve the quality of their livestock.
The Elite Ram Project managed by red meat promotion agency
Hybu Cig Cymru was a world first when it was launched in July
2010. Since then, hundreds of farmers have accessed funds which
have enabled them to buy top quality rams for their flocks.
But the scheme, funded by a £450,000 grant under the Rural
Development Plan for Wales, comes to an end soon and any farmer
wishing to take part must complete their claim forms by December
1st. It’s a first come, first served system so when the money
runs out it will spell the end of the project.
Dewi Hughes, HCC’s Project Executive, said: “We have been overwhelmed
by the success of the Elite Ram Project, which has proven to
be extremely popular with sheep breeders.
“The aim is to further improve the quality of Welsh livestock,
and purchasing a ram with superior genetics will improve the
lamb crop.
“Selecting a top performing ram on performance figures will
improve the conformation of lambs, and they will grow faster.
As a result they will be ready for slaughter sooner, reducing
the cost of production. It will also mean they will produce
fewer greenhouse gases, helping Welsh agriculture meet its
commitment to reduce climate change emissions.”
To qualify, producers need to complete an online training course
before being eligible for financial assistance of 50 per cent
– up to a maximum of £400 – towards purchasing a premium quality
ram. The ram must be in the top 25 per cent of their breed
in muscle depth, scan weight or maternal ability.
To date, more than 2,100 farmers have registered under the
scheme and almost 700 rams have been funded, with producers
being able to claim an average of £320 towards the purchase
price.
Details of the scheme, together with the online training programme,
can be found at the following address – www.eliteramproject.org.uk

Are your rams and bulls ready, willing and able?
Did you know that one in five rams are infertile? Or that one
in three bulls don’t make the mark when it comes to fertility?
The consequences for farmers of such underperforming livestock
can be serious. With fewer lambs or calves being born, breeding
patterns are disrupted with potentially serious consequences
for the business.
Farmers can reduce the risks by carrying out some simple checks
before mating gets underway, and funding from red meat promotion
agency Hybu Cig Cymru can help.
“Rams and bulls have to be in good physical shape, with a good
libido and produce viable semen – in other words they have
to be ready, willing and able,” said Dewi Hughes, HCC’s Project
Executive.
“While farmers can ensure their livestock are in good physical
shape, the only way to determine their semen quality is through
a microscope, and this is where HCC can help.”
HCC can provide a maximum of £70 funding in one year towards
the semen testing of bulls and a maximum of £50 in one year
towards the semen testing of rams. All farmers have to do is
arrange a date with their vet to complete the fertility test,
and then send in a claim form to HCC – with a receipt from
the vet and the results of the examination.
Further details on semen testing for bulls can be obtained
on the HCC website at http://www.hccmpw.org.uk/funding/fertility_testing/fertility_testing_-_bulls.aspx or for rams: http://www.hccmpw.org.uk/funding/fertility_testing/fertility_testing_-_rams.aspx
