Texel lamb from Hereford wins RABI trophy

A pure bred Dutch Texel lamb, bred and exhibited by R J Slade of Pembridge, Hereford, won the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) perpetual trophy at last week's East of England Smithfield Festival in Peterborough.

In an entry of first class prime lambs the excellent wether lamb held off strong challengers.

The RABI charity sheep class, first introduced at the Royal Smithfield Show in 2004, is an open class for single lambs of any breed or cross, the sale price of which is donated to the farming charity. As a result of the generosity of the eight exhibitors, who donated lambs, and of the auctioneers, Newark Livestock Market, who waived their commission, 100% of the sale price went to RABI, raising over £920.

Mr. Slade's Texel sold for the top price of £170 with four others, including three ewe lambs brought for breeding, selling for over £100.

RABI chief executive Paul Burrows said: "I am delighted that the Royal Smithfield Club has made this competition part of the show's schedule, not just raising much needed funds but also assisting us to promote awareness of the help which is available. We really appreciate the support and generosity of the exhibitors, several of whom have donated lambs since the class was introduced in 2004, and the auctioneers, as well as the Royal Smithfield Club and the East of England Show Society."
