Olympian Backs Sheep Meat Consumption
A leading Olympic athlete has given his backing to meat consumption
after confirming his support for the healthy role that red meat
plays in the diet.
Top cyclist Geraint Thomas has confirmed he will
continue to be the sporting ambassador for Welsh Lamb and Welsh
Beef through this Olympic year and into 2013.
John Yates chief executive of Texel Society added “Geraint is
a fabulous ambassador for the welsh industry and the young people
in general. He is a true advocate of health fitness and professionalism,
having him involved in this Olympic year is particularly poignant,
and our best wishes are offered to him and the GB Cycling team”
The Welshman, who was recently named the Olympian of the Year
for Cycling, signed up for the role with Welsh red meat promotion
agency Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales in 2011, promoting
the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet and the benefits
that athletes can get from eating red meat.
Thomas said “I am delighted to confirm that I will be the Welsh
Lamb and Welsh Beef sporting ambassador for another year. Welsh
Lamb and Welsh Beef are excellent sources of nutrients, such as
protein, iron and zinc, which are essential to help your body recover
after exercise.
“I feel it’s important that young people are told about the importance
of eating lean red meat as part of balanced diet and I look forward
to talking with them over the coming months.”
Dai Davies, chairman of Hybu Cig Cymru, said “Geraint is a fantastic
ambassador for Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef and I am delighted that
he has agreed to continue with the role for another year.
“He has done an outstanding job this year getting the message
to young people that red meat is important to maintaining a healthy
body while exercising and I would like to wish him and the whole
of Team GB the best of luck in the coming Olympics.”
