$12,000 Texel ram will pay for dream kitchen

NZ Texel breeder Sharon Paterson will be able to build her dream kitchen now.

The Waikaka farmer achieved the top price of $12,000 for her Waikaka Texel Stud ram that Rural Livestock bought for Andrew and Anna Laing, of Banks Peninsula, at the Gore Ram Fair on Wednesday 18th January 2011.

Mrs Paterson, who started breeding texels as her "little hobby" 12 years ago was thrilled with the price she achieved but it was back to work at Farmers Mutual Group following the sale.

"I was absolutely stoked. I was hoping to get half what I got for him," she said.

The price for Mrs Paterson's ram was believed to be the highest paid for a texel ram so far this year and eclipsed the $10,000 paid for a perendale on Tuesday.

"He's got great balance and the performance figures to go with him," she said. Mrs Paterson's ram was named supreme texel ram at the West Otago A&P Show in November last year and was first place ram hogget and reserve champion at the Wyndham A&P Show.

The money she received for him would "contribute to a new kitchen", she said.

Mrs Paterson sold a total of four rams at the sale with the others making $4500, $2200 and $1500.
