Blueprint for Recording
Welcome to the Texel
Recording Scheme
The Texel Recording
Scheme helps pedigree breeders to identify the
best breeding lines within their flocks and helps
commercial producers to locate rams with superior
breeding potential for a given set of traits. Breeding
potential is determined through performance recording
and the production of Estimated Breeding Values
(EBVs).
These guidance notes are designed to help
pedigree producers make maximum use of the Society’s
Objective Recording Scheme both in terms of identifying
superior rams and ewes for flock replacement and
for providing EBVs to market rams to the commercial
customer.
We are in a fast changing industry and
producers of breeding sheep, both males and females,
will see increasing requirements to demonstrate
the genetic superiority of the animals we expect
to market. The Society is pump-priming this new
objective recording initiative with a £30K
investment which makes objective recording more
cost effective, increases uptake and increases
the Society’s marketing of the EBVs produced.
This booklet contains guidance notes on the following
topics:
1. How to register with the Society to
become a ‘Full Recording’ Member.
2.
What is an Estimated Breeding Value or EBV ?
3.
What information should I record and how do I submit
the data?
4. How are my annual Recording Fees calculated
and who do I pay ?
5. How are reports presented
to me and what does the information mean?
