English National Two Day Show and Sale
of 349 Pedigree Texel Sheep

At THE LIVESTOCK MARKET, WORCESTER
MONDAY & TUESDAY, 26TH & 27TH AUGUST 2002

Cumbrian bid secures 27,000 guineas ram lamb

Extraordinary demand continues at Worcester

A packed ring and keen interest from both pedigree and commercial buyers greeted the English National at Worcester, ensuring yet another very successful sale. The entry included some excellent sheep, which were particularly well sought after, especially those genotyped ARR/ARR, which attracted the kind of premiums already experienced in the Scottish National sale the previous week.

Colin G Mair and Partners' Muiresk Inspirational certainly inspired the large company of buyers drawn from all parts of the country, who bid freely and enthusiastically for the February born lamb, resulting in the day's top price of 27,000 guineas, given by Cumbrian breeder Ruth Stevenson.

A son of Muiresk Final Winston, Inspirational was out of a Tophill Emerald ewe, and is a scrapie category 1 lamb, genotyped ARR/ARR, emphasising that breeders were prepared to give serious money for the best sheep in this category.

Another ARR/ARR lamb out of the Muiresk pen was Incentive, a February born twin by Muiresk Forever out of a Glenside Drum Major ewe, selling to Castle Ashby Farms for 2,700 guineas.

The first lamb of the day showed that breeders meant business. From the pen of N B J Layton, Lyonshall Ivor, a January born single out of a Turin David dam, was a son of Muiresk Grand Prix, whose dam is the full sister to the 33,000 guineas Muiresk Blondin. A bid of 2,700 guineas secured the lamb for A E Williams (Clun).

10 lots later, and a bid of 4,400 guineas was made by Devon breeder W J Winkworth (Winkleigh) for Willie Knox's first lamb, Haddo Integrity. This February born single was genotyped ARR/ARR, and was sired by the 50,000 guineas Craighead Hercules, who, until this season's sales, was the highest price Texel ever sold. Baltier Winston sired the Haddo dam.

Minutes later, and the bidding was raised to 10,000 guineas, made by Herefordshire breeder Russell Watkins (Millend) as he invested in Nita and Bruce Renwick's Castlecairn Investment, judge R M Mallow's Supreme Champion and another son of Hercules, out of a Glenside Clear Cut ewe.

6,200 guineas was given twice during the lamb sale, firstly by Northamptonshire based Castle Ashby Farms for Glenside Inspector, one of eight lambs shown by John Forsyth. Inspector, by Glenside His Nibs, was the first prize lamb at Ayr, and his Bow Hall William sired dam also bred the 19,000 guineas Glenside Drum Major and the 16,000 guineas Glenside Eurostar.

The second time was less than 15 lots from the end, with buyer interest remaining strong, when the same call was made for a lamb out of James and Hannah Draper's pen of six, with Drum Major featuring again. Fresh from their triumph at Lanark, when they sold Claybury Istabraq for a UK ram record price of 88,000 guineas, the Drapers sold the ARR/ARR genotyped Claybury Iain, by Milnbank Yesterday out of a Glenside Drum Major dam, to Gwent breeder, Avril Evans.

And yet again Drum Major was involved, when, almost as the sale concluded, established Cumbrian breeder Peter Woof bid 4,000 guineas to secure a February born twin category 1 son, Talcoed Insole, out of a Millend Concept ewe, the first lamb out of G V Hardwick & Son's pen of four.

In the shearling section, good quality category 1 rams were again well sought after by breeders, topping at 4,000 guineas for Bill Quick's 2nd prize winner, Loosebeare High Flyer, catalogued as an outstanding son of Llanthomas Decimus out of a homebred ewe by Seneirl Cocky, who went to the Broxwood flock of Margaret Gwilliam.

James and Hannah Draper sold their 1st prize shearling to D I Corfield & Partners, who gave 2,300 guineas for Claybury Highwayman. By Claybury Falcon out of a Hillfields Yorick ewe, Highwayman is a full brother to Gold Blend, sold for 3,000 guineas at Lanark in 2000.

It took a bid of 2,200 guineas from Staffordshire buyer E McMahon to buy the category 1 Penstones Herbert from Colin Ponting's pen. Out of a Highfields Your Highness bred ewe by Alwent Flint, Herbert was another ram genotyped ARR/ARR.

Monday evening's females topped at 1,820 guineas for a shearling ewe from A E William's Clun flock, selling to Brecon based Philip John Evans (Ffostyll). Genotyped ARR/ARR, the twin born gimmer wasby Clun Emperor out of a Clun Chief bred ewe.

The female Champion came from Nigel Gibbs' Bettonfield pen. By Cambwell Diamond Stevie out of a Cambwell Borderer ewe, she sold for 750 guineas to S R Lewis, Pembrokeshire, with the Reserve Champion selling for 570 guineas. This gimmer, shown by J & G Y Davies (Aman), was by Muiresk Dalton, sired by Tophill Crackerjack out of an Annan Won O Won ewe, with Annan Blue Blood behind her dam.
