Welsh National Sale 2002

Welsh National Show and Sale of Pedigree Texel Sheep

At LLANDOVERY AUCTION MARKET
MONDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER 2002

New venue and record price of 8,000 guineas

Claybury lamb pen averages £2,322

The sale moved to Llandovery Market in Carmarthenshire, and was well received by both vendors and purchasers, the latter emulating the determined bidding of those at the three other national sales to set a new top price of 8,000 guineas and creating new record averages in all sections.

And also as at the other national sales, whilst good sheep were the order of the day, the ARR/ARR (category 1) genotypes set the price standard throughout.

Claybury Inmate
Claybury Inmate - 8,000gns Claybury's MLC ram lamb class winner - 2,800gns

There were strong entries in the show classes, but Shropshire's James and Hannah Draper kept the Claybury flock in the limelight, rounding off a superb season at the National shows and sales, when Doncaster based John L North Jnr adjudged Claybury Inmate to be the best ram lamb, and sent him on to become overall Champion.

Mrs J C Gould (Woodmarsh) followed the judge next day, bidding a record breaking 8,000 guineas for this category 1 son of Milnbank Yesterday out of a ewe by Glenside Drum Major, a sire who has left his stamp on all the British sales this year. Another of the Claybury lambs, a substitute by Muiresk Final Winston and again out of a Glenside Drum Major ewe, won the MLC class and later sold for 2,800 guineas to F Harrington, Co Roscommon, Northern Ireland.

The Drapers sold another category 1 lamb out of a Drum Major ewe. The February born twin Inhabit, sired by Cambwell Emperor Second, went to the Mortimer flock of Leominster breeders, Einon Probert & Sons for 2,500 guineas, to leave an overall average of £2,322 for their pen of seven lambs.

Claybury breeding also featured in N B Layton's sale of his category 3 lamb, Lyonshall Irvine by Hawkeye out of a Ballaglonney Chieftain ewe, who went to R M & G L Watkins (Millend) for 2,000 guineas.

Colin and Wendy Phillips (Powerhouse) took 1,900 guineas for the first of their five ram lambs all sired by yet more Claybury blood, the shearling Harpoon. Genotyped ARR/ARR, the February born single Inferno went to Mike Horton's Halfpenny flock at Burgill, Herefordshire.

Gwestydd Hexagon
Gwestydd Hexagon - 2,700gns

Loosebeare High Flyer from the Quick family emerged from the judging ring with the red rosette. A strong shearling by their Douganhill Ferrari, he later sold to Robert Watts (Rowden) for 2,000 guineas, but top price of the day in this ring was 2,700 guineas given by D Jones (Portway) and G Davies (Caebetrain) for the twin bred Gwestydd Hexagon from T G and P M Jarman. Sired by Muiresk Final Winston out of a Ballaglonney ewe, Hexagon was genotyped ARR/ARR.

Another category 1 ram, the homebred Hayen out of Angela Nairey's Meinspride pen, sold for 1,800 guineas. By Whitemire Braer Rabbit out of Muiresk Copyright, this twin went to the Scolton flock of Haverfordwest breeders W O & P E Reed.

In a strong shearling ewe line up, the champion ewe from R L Williams (Curig) sold to J R and H J Draper (Claybury) for 1,400 guineas, but was overshadowed by A E Williams and Son (Clun), who secured 1,600 guineas for their ewe purchased by J Wright, Ludlow.

The Curig ewe was a category 1 twin by Cambwell Emperor Second out of an Annan Blue Chip ewe; Clun Commander sired the top price ewe, again genotyped ARR/ARR, with Glenside Action Man behind the dam.
