Caereinion Jewel Shearling ram sells for 6,000gns
An ‘outstanding show of sheep’ at the Welsh National Texel Show and Sale held in Llandovery saw a shearling ram sold for 6,000 guineas. The sale, organised by the Texel Sheep Society, saw other top prices include the champion ram lamb sold for 2,400 guineas and the reserve champion shearling ram sold for 1,100 guineas. Eight ram lambs sold for over 1,000 guineas, six shearling rams sold for over 1,000 guineas and four shearling ewes sold for over 1,000 guineas.
“There was a roaring trade for females and the yearling rams”, said Club Secretary and Clee, Tompkinson and Francis auctioneer, Gareth Griffiths. “The shearling rams drew some very attractive prices because of the commercial interest. There was a more selective trade for the ram lambs, although there was an excellent demand for the breeders’ type of ram lamb”.

The headline price of six thousand guineas was for a shearling ram, Caereinion Jewel, group one genotype and bred by farmer and builder Cefin Pryce of Tyn y Pwll, Cyfronydd, Welshpool. He was particularly pleased because it’s the first time he has broken through the thousand guineas barrier – and because it was sold to noted breeder Bill Quick.
“It’s quite a compliment”, he added. “It puts me on the map and it’s great to know that he’s going to a breeder who knows quality stock. I’m also pleased because I had spotted the potential in his sire.
“I wanted to buy him from Roger Williams who runs the Clun Flock, but he didn’t want to let him go, and in the end he agreed to let me use him if I paid the £25 registration fee! It turned out to be a great deal.”
The next highest price was for a ram lamb and went to a brother and sister whose pedigree Texel flock has helped them to pay their way through university. Claybury Kamikaze, born on St Valentine’s Day, sold for 2,400 guineas to J Jones of Tregynon, Newtown. He took the overall championship and is Scrapie Group One, sired by Haddo Ignitor and from the same family as 21,000 guineas Annan Elite and Annan Born Free.
He was bred by James and Hannah Draper of Ensdon House, Montford Bridge, Shrewsbury. They have been making headlines in the past few years commanding some top prices. Two years ago Claybury Istabraq sold for 88,000 guineas at Lanark.
James and Hannah began breeding pedigree Texels in 1997 to provide tups for their father Rob’s, commercial flock. He demanded top quality rams and the standard was set for the youngsters who speeded up their breeding programme with the use of AI and later embryo transfer. They are now building up to a flock of fifty ewes.
“Father wanted sires with good conformation for commercial crossing so we knew that we had to produce good quality tups”, says James. “It was a good discipline. We breed quality pedigree stock, but we know that the commercial market is also very important”.
The female champion was bought by L Jones of Llangurig, Tywyn, for 1,500 guineas. She was bred by David Chave who runs the Peacehay flock with his sister Sue at Sampford Arundel near Wellington in Somerset. They always sell at the Welsh National and bred last year’s champion. He vowed to ‘come back in force’ next year and reclaim the overall championship!
The reserve male champion was a shearling ram, Canllefaes Jack-Pot bred by W T Davies of Penparc, Cardigan, which sold for 1,100 guineas. The reserve female was bred by Nick Layton of Lyonshall, Herefordshire.
Society chairman Keith Campbell who farms near Loch Lomond said the Welsh sale saw the trend for quality stock selling at good prices continuing. He was delighted that clearance and average prices had been so high throughout the season.
“The highest average has been that paid for ram lambs at Lanark”, he added. “They made an average each of £2,500 for 390 sold and that’s a record clearance. It would have been a record price too except that Tophill Joe sold for 122,000 guineas last year which put £200 on the average price of each lamb”.
He added that the AMC English National had also seen record averages for Worcester of £876.69 for ram lambs. Scrapie resistance had been a factor in driving prices up. There was also the fact that 40% of prime lambs sold are now sired by a Texel lamb.
Mr Campbell who is in his first of a two-year term as chairman says he’s confidant that the breed’s upward trend will continue. There had been a record number of birth notifications this year and a rise in membership figures.
Texel Sheep Society chief executive, Steven McLean, added that he had been delighted with the good averages and very good clearance at the Welsh National. There had been a good strong commercial trade, as well as from breeders, and there had been a lot of new buyers.
