Champion tops Texels at 2200gns
(Report by Patsy Hunter – Scottish Farmer)
Numbers were greatly reduced at the show and sale of in-lamb Texel gimmers, at Lanark, in January. In total, 49 lots were sold — compared to 134 last year — with only one female breaking the four-figure barrier.
At 2200gns, this was the pre-sale show champion, an ARR/ARR Cloburn gimmer by Grey Peel Iceman, a son of Claircot First Foot. Out of an Ettrick Guiness-sired dam, she is in lamb to Knock Kinetic — a ram by Watchknowe Jumbo II, bought last year for 2400gns.
The Cloburn lot was the last of Eric Quigley’s Thankerton-based flock to be sold, following his dispersal sale last year. Forking out the money for the champion was the judge, Andrew Knox, of Mid Haddo, Fyvie, Turriff, who thought her an ‘outstanding champion, with great width throughout’.
Reaching the second-top price was the reserve champion, from Gordon Gray’s Ettrick flock, at Sunnycroft, Lindean, Selkirk. Shown by son, David, this ARR/ARR daughter of the 33,000gns Clinterty Impressive is out of a dam by Knock Firefly. In lamb to Crookholm Impressario — a 9000gns son of Craighead Hercules — she sold at 800gns to Graham Morrison, Inchbruich, Banff.
Meanwhile, R&E Howieson of Elsrickle, Biggar, sold their offering from their Croft flock, for 700gns.
