NORTHERN BANK PREMIER SHOW & SALE 2005
<< Back
At Dungannon Farmers’ Mart
Thursday 18th & Friday 19th August 2005
An exceptional trade with bids coming fast and furious was the only way to describe the trade for shearling ewes at the Northern Bank Premier Texel show and sale in Dungannon on Thursday 18th August 2005 with the packed sale ring bidding strongly to 1600 guineas.
The price topper was the reserve female champion, a Group 1 shearling ewe by Watchknowe Jugernaut , out of a sire bred by Victor Chestnutt - Clougher Flashman, and was consigned by John McFall, Broughshane. The purchaser, Owen Donahue who travelled from Derrylin in Co. Fermanagh is a new breeder who started his flock last year and obviously wants top class foundation stock. He was a consistent bidder at the event and purchased quite a number of the top priced lots. He had his sights on the female champion and eventually acquired her for the sale’s top price of 1600 gns.
The second highest price was paid twice by the same purchaser. Firstly for a fourth prize shearling ewe which was in keen demand due to the special breeding on the female line. This group 2 ewe was exhibited by Robert and Samuel Chesney, Kircubbin. She is by Drummillar Iceman and is out of a special ewe sired by Ballagloney Gorry. She was eventually knocked down to John Wray, Eglinton for 1200 gns. Later in the sale, this same purchaser again paid 1200gns for Damien and Michael Tumelty’s Forkins Joker daughter out of a Lindstair Honky Tonk ewe.
The female champion was next in the price stakes. This strong Irish Hill Iceman gimmer exhibited by Mary Clarke, Massey Avenue Belfast which was reserve champion at Lurgan Show made 1150 gns. She is out of a Meadowvale Fireman ewe and went home to Andrew Fyffe’s flock at Omagh
Two animals hit the 1100gns mark and again Owen Donahue was bidding for quality. He made another purchase from John McFall’s flock acquiring another shearling whose dam was again by Clougher Flashman while the sire is the noted Cornerstone Isaac.
The second 1100 gn ewe came from Alistair Gault’s flock at Newtownabbey. This Knock Impulse daughter out of a Cambwell Darky ewe also caught Owen Donahue’s attention.
Three well known breeders took home 1000gns each for their shearling ewes with Owen Donahue again ensuring that he was purchasing outstanding foundation stock with Victor Chestnutt’s shearling ewe by Ettrick Juke Box which is out of a special homebred Clougher Dominator ewe. Leslie and Karen Beacom from Ballywalter sold a Stonefield Inch Perfect daughter out of a Rams Goldfinger ewe to Pat Lyons for the same sum and this was matched a third time by Andrew Fyffe who was again buying quality stock and purchased Michael Watson’s shearling by Straidarran Jaguar which was out of a Tullagh Hey-Boy ewe.
Victor Chestnutt, Northern Ireland representative on the British Texel Society Society’s Council commented “This trade emphasises the increased interest in the Texel breed. When other breeds are predicting gloom and doom we are forging ahead. It is noteworthy that some of the top priced animals are from relatively new flocks and that a number of the purchasers were looking for foundation stock or stock to increase their existing flocks. The Texel has so much to contribute to both the ram and ewe sections of the flock”

TEXEL RAMS SELL TO 5500 GNS.
Texel rams followed the example of the females sold on the previous day when they came on the market at the Northern Bank Premier Texel sale in Dungannon. Bidding was still going strong with breeders and commercial farmers anxious to obtain quality stock.
They were prepared to bid to 5500 gns for ram lambs and 2200 gns for shearling rams. The 5500 gns bid was paid for Milestonehill Landlord a ram lamb exhibited by Murray Annett, Rathfriland. This group 2 ram is by Milnbank Hitman which is also the sire of Knock Impulse which bred the record priced 122,000 guinea ram. He is out of a Turin Elegant ewe and after spirited bidding was knocked down to John Watson, Downpatrick, who is noted for turning out quality stock at many Texel events.
Also selling over the 5000 guinea mark was Robert Kennedy’s Group 1 ram lamb Maineview Lionheart which was by the sire, Cornerstone Jethro, a full brother to Cornerstone Isaac which has bred many top priced rams. He is out of a Glenleary IQ ewe which was never beaten as a shearling , including Balmoral Show. Southern buyer, Tom Bailey decided that he was not going to miss this quality lot and paid 5200 gns to secure this ram lamb. A pen mate by the same sire sold to Pat Lyons for 1000 gns.
Next in the price stakes was the ram lamb which took the Northern Bank Supreme Championship award, Robert and Kim Mulligan’s Brague Looks The Part. This lamb followed in his sire’s footsteps as Dunore Kendrick took this same award at last year’s event and was purchased by Robert and Kim for a record Northern Ireland price of 13,000gns. Robert Mulligan said “ This lamb carries the characteristics of his sire having a tight skin, great conformation and tremendous character and style. Brague Looks The Part is out of a Sweet Wall Hopewell ewe and was again the sort of quality that attracted John Watson’s attention so he paid 4200 gns to secure him for his Duvarren flock.
The Brague prefix had a very successful day selling Brague Looks Good, a Boat Jetsetter son from the same female line for 2200 gns to John McFall, Broughshane. Boat Jetsetter was the sire of last year’s reserve champion exhibited by the Mulligan duo and his sons have sold to 7000 gns. Two other sons of Dunore Kendrick from the Brague pen sold for 1200 and 850 gns.
Ballydonaghy Linnet a group 1 son of the Scottish sire, Muiresk Klinton and out of a Seneirl Hernando ewe, exhibited by P J Kinney, Crumlin, was in keen demand and was eventually snapped up by the Wilson, Foster, Watson syndicate for 4000gns.
H and R Wilson presented just one lamb from their Montalto flock at Ballymena but it was quality one, and this son of Brague Jethro, Montalto Lucky Boy was one of three animals which sold for 3800gns. Malcolm Reid, Ballygawley, secured the Montalto lamb.
While Christopher Mullan, Limavady bid the same price for the second prize winning Crawfordsland Kracker son Crawfordsland Lee-Roy from David James Boyd’s flock at Ballyclare.
The third lamb in this bracket was Blackstown Linesman, a Geordie Kipper son from W J & J Wilson’s flock at Crumlin which Leslie and Karen Beacom took home to their Castleknowe flock at Ballywalter.
John Currie’s Tullagh flock at Ballymena had a really worthwhile outing with four sons of Knock Impulse, the sire of the 122,000 gn Tophill Joe, all selling for leading prices. His price topper was Tullagh Limbo a Group 1 lamb out of a ewe by Garngour Delegate, the sire bred by Jim Clark who was judging the Texel event at Lanark this week. This lamb sold for 3000 gns to Welsh buyer, David Jones.
While a pen mate, Tullagh Lucky, with the same breeding which took the reserve championship sold for 1500 gns to Harper George, Crumlin. The remaining two Tullagh lambs in the pen were out of Tullagh Danny Boy ewes, the home bred sire that has been a consistent breeder of top priced progeny for this flock. Tullagh Lexus sold to Joe Gallagher from Co.Sligo for 1100 gns while Tullagh Loyal was snapped up by Co. Wexford breeder, John Neville.
Greenmount College also featured in the top price bracket with their Rams flock Rams Lighthouse, a Baltier Just Look son out of an Annan Brave Heart ewe sold to Henry Gamble of Bangor for 2000 gns while two other sons from this sire sold for 850 and 680 gns.
Topping the shearling ram prices was Alastair Gault’s Forkins Kickback a Group 1 ram by Tophill Jackal. The dam of this price topper is by Springhill Expert and she is also ET sister to Sweetwall Gigilo. Paul Salter from Cheshire was the top bidder for this lot and paid 2200 gns.
