NORTHERN BANK PREMIER SHOW & SALE

Thursday 17th August & Friday 18th August 2006

Dungannon Farmers' Mart

There were gasps of amazement as bids went at 2000 and 3000 gns a time to realise a record price of 30,000gns at the British Texel Society’s Northern Bank Premier show and sale in Dungannon.

Record priced Castleknowe Matchmaker (BKL06075) sold for 30,000gns to J Mellon and S Symes.
Record priced Castleknowe Matchmaker (BKL06075) sold for 30,000gns to J Mellon and S Symes.

This record price for a ram lamb is well in excess of the current record of 13,000gns and followed on from a record price of 4000gns in the shearling ewe section the previous day.

The 30,000 gns record breaker, an outstanding ram lamb from the Castleknowe flock of Leslie and Karen Beacom at Ballywalter created interest from the moment he arrived at the event, especially from the GB buyers.

Castleknowe Matchmaker is by Blackstown, a Geordie Kipper son and Tophill Joe grandson whose pedigree goes back to Knock Impulse and a Haddo ewe.
Leslie and Karen are so pleased with the progeny from this sire that all of the ewe lambs are being kept this year.

Matchmaker’s dam is by Stonefieldhill Grand Champion. Leslie and Karen had viewed some of his progeny when on a visit to Scotland and had seen him as a shearling. They were impressed and decided to purchase the semen.

Leslie Beacom said “This ram lamb looked the business from birth. He has excellent conformation with a great head, tight skin and good colouring.” John Mellon and Dr Steven Symes from Yorkshire were the successful purchasers of the sale topper.

Top prices were the order of the day as Jim Wilson sold his supreme champion for 14,000gns to Tom Bailey , Co. Meath. Tom has been selling recently as well as buying having sold Texel rams at the Texel event in the South of Ireland for 37,000euros.

Supreme Champion Blackstown Monty (WWB06083) sold for 14,000gns.

The supreme champion, Blackstown Monty is a home bred ram by Drumillar Lad, which Jim bought at the Texel sale last September. Drummiller Lad is by Cloughbane Hans, son of Cornerstone Isaac while the dam is by Brague IOU which Jim bought in partnership with John Foster at the premier Texel sale in 2002 for 2000gns.

TEXEL EWE MAKES NORTHERN IRELAND RECORD

A Northern Ireland record ewe price of 4,000gns created quite a sensation at the British Texel Society’s premier sale in Dungannon Farmers Mart this week.

A packed sale ring witnessed spirited bidding for a top quality shearling ewe from Barclay Bell’s Kiltariff flock at Rathfriland, but the final tussle was between Tom Bailey from Co. Meath who is also well known for his Suffolk championship’s at Balmoral Show and who just recently sold a Texel ram for 37.000 euros, and Ballymena breeder, Danny McKay.

But Danny has been building up a quality flock and was not going to miss this outstanding ewe even if it meant paying a record price. This ewe is by Milnbank Hitman the grandsire of the Texel record breaker,Tophill Joe, and has a number of show championships to her credit this summer and was eventually knocked down to Danny at 4,000gns. She is out of a Castlecairn Hadrian dam and her twin sister has been retained in the Kiltariff flock.

John Currie had a very successful sale from his Tullagh flock at Ballymena taking the reserve female championship, and second highest price of 2,000gns, as well as selling three other ewes for 520, 500 and 500 gns His reserve female champion is a Cornerstone Isaac daughter out of a Carrowdore His Highness daughter which was second at the 30th anniversary show at Glenarm and champion at Ballymena Show. Her purchaser was Adrian McCartney, Cloughmills.

Brian Hanthorn ,Tynan sold his fourth prizewinning ewe by Loosebear Imp for 1,200gns. She is out of a Muiresk Forever daughter and found a new home over the border in Donegal when she was purchased by S Murray.

Co.Fermanagh purchaser, Seamus McGuiness from Ennniskillen paid 1,100 gns to secure a Mullan Jubilee daughter out of a Lindstair Haugh ewe from Nigel and Dennis Hamill’s Ballynedrenta flock at Crumlin.

Female Champion from the Forkins flock of A Gault sold for 1,000gns

Danny McKay was again on the look out for quality and paid 1,000gns to secure Alastair Gault’s female champion. This ewe was sired by Knock Impulse the sire of the Texel record holder Tophill Joe at 122,000gns and is out of a home bred dam by Goughfoot which has bred a lot of quality females that Alastair has retained in the Forkins flock.
