WELSH NATIONAL SALE – A GREAT BUZZ
 |
| Top price of
the day, 4000gns went to Caereinion Landlord
(PEC05018) for breeder Cefin Pryce. |
A good sale, a great buzz, and the right venue set
the scene at the Welsh National Texel Show and sale,
where the Haddo Jogger bloodlines once again dominated
the show ring. Held at the Royal Welsh Showground
in Builth Wells, the event saw a top price of 4,000
guineas paid for a shearling ram bred by Cefin Pryce
of Lanfair Caereinion. The ram was placed third in
its class at the pre sale show and was sold to a
team of three, Stephen Williams of Shrewsbury, Ed
Samuel of Hereford, and Ballaglonney Farms, Isle
of Man.
Stephen Williams of Great Wollascott, Shrewsbury,
led the consortium which paid the top price of 4,000
guineas for Caereinion Landlord. He said the ram
was a half brother both to the 6,000 guinea Caereinion
Jewel and the 120,000 guinea Loosebeare Imp, and
he had once owned the maternal grandfather, Ballaglonney
Bonus. He also liked the fact that the sire had also
bred the 120,000 Loosebeare Imp which in turn had
produced the 2005 Royal and Royal Highland champion.
“We all liked him”, he added. “He
has such a great power and scale and his breeding
is a little bit different which is needed and which
hopefully will be good for the future.”
The ram was bred by builder and smallholder, Cefin
Pryce, who lives with his wife Tammy and three children
at Llanfair Caereinion. He was delighted and so glad
that he had made the original decision to AI its
sire, Summerwood Grand Union.
“I had the 6,000 guineas top price at the
Welsh National two years ago”, he added. “He
had the same mother as this one which made 4,000
guineas here today. She’s out of a Ballaglonney
Bonus tup.”
 |
| Female & Supreme
Champion was Peacehay (CFP05078) which sold
for 1200gns. |
The top priced shearling ewe was the overall champion,
bred from a son of Haddo Jogger by the Chave family
who run the Peacehay Flock at Wellington, Somerset.
It went to William McCaffrey of Cheshire for 1200
guineas.
The Welsh overall champion was a Lyonshall King
of Clubs daughter, Lyonshall King of Clubs, being
in David Chave's, view the most successful son of
Haddo Jogger. He feels it's this tup that has established
the reputation of Haddo Jogger.
“This underlines once again what Haddo Jogger
can do”, he added.”I can’t sing
the praises of Haddo Jogger enough. He is the foundation
of so much good breeding in the West Country and
beyond.”
 |
| Society Judge Robert
Cartledge of Buxton, Derbyshire. |
Sharing his enthusiasm for the champion ewe was,
naturally enough, Judge Robert
Cartledge of Buxton, Derbyshire. He had been
pleased with her size, correctness, and the fact
that she was a good all round ewe.
Buyer William McCaffery has only been breeding Texels
for two years and is fast making a name for himself.
His Scholars flock takes its name from woodland on
the family smallholding at Malpas, Cheshire.
“I liked the character and her body capacity”,
said William who is in his twenties. “She has
tremendous conformation, is very correct and well
proportioned”.
William who has 15 ewes was also selling at the
Welsh National. Earlier this year he had a first
and second at Nantwich with two ram lambs and went
on to sell the one privately for 1,000 guineas and
the second at Worcester for 600 guineas. He also
came second in the Shropshire and Borders Small Flock
competition
Steven McLean, chief executive of the British Texel
Sheep Society, was pleased with the day’s trading.
Its saw a 66% clearance, with 209 of the 311 sheep
entered sold and he felt brisk selling had justified
the move from Llandovery to Builth Wells.
“There’s been a very good buzz here
today”, he said.”The buyers are here
and I’m happy that we made the right decision.
It was a good move.
“It hasn’t been straightforward because
of the need to protect biosecurity for the main NSA
Wales and Borders Ram Sale, but the indications are
that we certainly had a bigger number of potential
buyers.”
Auctioneer Gareth Griffiths of Clee Tompkinson said
it had been a good sale of pedigree stock for pedigree
breeders. Quality sheep had sold readily and at good
prices.
David Chave who runs the Peacehay Flock with wife
Kath and his sister, Susan Summerhay, was delighted
to follow last month’s success at Builth Wells.
He had the highest price of all the rams, 900 guineas,
at the NSA Early Ram Sale with Jailhouse Rock out
of a homebred tup sired by Haddo Jogger.
The 1200 guineas paid for a granddaughter of Haddo
Jogger follows on from the AMC National Sale at Worcester
where a daughter of Haddo Jogger was champion and
achieved a sale price of 5,500 guineas for Vaughan
Farms.
 |
