RAM LAMBS TO 28,000GNS AT DUNGANNON

An outstanding trade at the British Texel Society’s Northern Bank Premier show and sale in Dungannon on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th August 2007 saw a top bid of 28,000gns paid for a ram lamb from Alistair Gault’s flock at Newtownabbey.

Forkins Nijinsky is by Douganhill McFly, a Glenside King 2 son purchased by a consortium which included Alistair Gault last year at Lanark. His dam is by Knock Impulse which is famous for having sired the highest priced ram lamb in the UK, Tophill Joe for 122,000gns. Forkins Nijinsky was purchased by Tom Bailey from Co. Meath who has sold record priced Texels himself and who is a regular buyer at the Dungannon event having purchased the supreme champion last year.

Also in demand was Castleknowe Notorious a lamb from Leslie and Karen Beacom’s flock at Ballywalter. This Blackstown Linesman 1 son and Geordie Kipper grandson by a Stonefield Grand Champion dam is a full brother of Castleknowe Matchmaker which made history at last year’s event selling for a record price of 30,000gns. Castleknowe Notorious was knocked down to Geoffrey Fleck, Ballymena and Nigel Hamill, Crumlin for 5600gns.

He also sold another lamb, Tamnamoney Ned, from this sire and by a Knock Impulse daughter for 5200gns to Adrian McCartney, Cloughmills with Alan Thompson and Simpson and Calvin, Ballymoney.

Rams from John Currie’s Tullagh flock at Ballymena may have missed a trip to Lanark but they made a very worthwhile trip to Dungannon for the British Texel Society’s Premier show and sale, taking the supreme champion of the show and the reserve champion awards.

Judge, David Milne from Forfar in Angus selected Tullagh Neptune for his supreme champion. Tullagh Neptune is by Castlecairn Keltic Star which bred the shearling ewe sold at Lanark for 17,000gns. His twin sister is the top index lamb in the Tullagh flock. Tullagh Neptune is out of a Tullagh Kentucky daughter, Kentucky was champion at Balmoral in 2004. Neptune went south of the border selling to a Galway consortium of Walsh, Kelly and Niland.

TOP PRICE EWE FOR 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Nigel and Dennis Hamill and their sons from Crumlin received a special award to celebrate 25 years of breeding Texel sheep. They took the top price of 1050 guineas in the shearling ewe section at the British Texel Society’s Premier show and sale in Dungannon.

Top price female at the Dungannon Sale was this gimmer owned by D & N Hamill & Sons, Crumlin, she sold for 1050gns.

This ewe is the first female sold from Ballydonaghy Istabraq, a ram bred by Paddy Kenney of Crumlin which was champion at the Ballyclare sale in 2002 and was purchased for 1000gns, and has since bred many champions. This top price was paid by Fairyglen Texels.

The Hamills’ Ballynadrenta flock also received 650gns for another ewe whose dam is an Istabraq daughter, and whose sire is by Woodmarsh Jewel, a ram bred by Barclay Bell. She was purchased by John Foster, Castlederg.

Coming second in the price stakes were the female champion and reserve. The female championship was taken by Brian Hanthorn from Tynan with an Annan Jewel daughter out of Muiresk Forever which produced gimmers last year which sold to 2,200gns. The female champion sold to Paul Swindell, Banbridge for 950gns.

The Female Champion (HBN06024) at the Northern Ireland Texel Show & Sale was from the Mullan Flock of Brian Hanthorn from Tynan. Brian is pictured receiving his award from Marcus McCollum of Northern Bank.
