| Texel Chief Executive Steven
McLean announces the Lock-In to members |
The Scottish National Texel Show and Sale at Lanark
Market suffered an almighty blow, as news of the
latest foot-and-mouth outbreak struck just as the
sheep had arrived at the market for the pre-sale
show on the Wednesday.
All plans were, therefore, sent in to disarray,
and then, to make matters worse, a sheep with a suspicious
mark on its jaw was discovered in the inspection,
causing a lock-down of the premises until a ministry
vet arrived from Galashiels to test the animal.
Eventually, the sheep in question was given the
all-clear, and, due to the fact that it was doubtful
the sale would get the go ahead the following day,
Texel Society officials, along with Lawrie and Symington
auctioneers, made the decision to sell all the sheep
that evening.
 |
| Last in the ring, selling
at 1.25am |
As would be expected in such circumstances, the
sale — which eventually finished up at 1.25am — became
essentially a breeders sale, as the majority of buyers
were consignors plus local buyers who were able to
get there at short notice.
At the end of the day, a 50% clearance was met,
with 203 ram lambs changing hands, levelling out
at £1754.37.
"Under the circumstances, I'd say it was a
remarkable sale," said Lawrie and Symington's
Brian Ross. "The breeder’s lambs were
a good trade. It wasn't ideal, but better to have
a sale than no sale," he added.
For the top end of the lambs, the demand was high
as ever, and it was the much talked about pen of
Garngour lambs from the Clark family's flock at North
Garngour, Lesmahagow, that led the trade — peaking
at 40,000gns and levelling out at a phenomenal £13,209,
for five.
 |
| Garngour
Nirvana (CJN07598) took the top price of
40,000gns for J & H
Clark |
Hitting the top spot — and eclipsing the 100-ewe
flock's previous top of 17,000gns, got in 1997 for
Garngour Diplomat — was Garngour Nirvana, a
son of Hexel Lexus, a Baltier I Catcher-sired ram
bought from Donald MacPherson at Lanark two years
ago. The dam, a daughter of Clynnog Joe Tex, goes
back to a Cambwell gimmer bought in 2001 for 2800gns.
Forking out the 40,000gns for this sale topper was
buyer of last year's 110,000gns seller at Carlisle,
Malcolm Reid, for his Kelso Texel flock at Kelso.
 |
| Second best price for the
Garngour flock went to Nijinsky (CJN07579)
selling at 16000gns |
And, making the 1600gns paid for Hexel Lexus seem
even more of a bargain, another son of his reached
the sale's third top price of 16,000gns. This was
Garngour Nobleman, out of a ewe by the 32,000gns
Fordafourie Kracker. Buying back some of his own
breeding was Sandy Lee, Fordafourie, Fraserburgh,
with a half share going to Albert and George Howie,
West Knock, Stuartfield, Peterhead.
Another from Garngour, a full ET brother to the
Clark's Carlisle and Worcester champions, reached
4500gns, going to James and Hannah Draper's Shrewsbury-based
Claybury flock. Garngour Nijinsky is by Tamnamoney
Lynbrook and out of a Clynnog Joe Tex-sired dam.
Meanwhile, the family's 35-ewe Teiglum flock sold
to a top of 5000gns, for Teiglum Noteworthy, a son
of the 21,000gns Craighead Masterpiece, out of a
ewe by Tapanui Icon. He went to Jim Currie, Carlinside,
Nemphlar, Lanark.
 |
| Castlecairn Nile God (RNA07149)
from Bruce Renwick sold for 28,000gns |
Second-best price of the sale was another that had
been hyped-up plenty beforehand, Bruce Renwick's
Castlecairn Nile God, from his flock at Legars, Kelso.
A son of the 12,000gns Humeston Midas, he is out
of a Baltier Kracker daughter that is a maternal
sister to Castlecairn Keltic Star. He now joins the
Sportsman's flock, selling at 28,000gns to Charlie
Boden, of Boden and Davies, Mellor Hall, Mellor,
Stockport.
 |
| Muiresk Northern Dancer
(MSK07634) from the Mairs soldfor 11,000gns |
Two ram lambs hit 11,000gns; the first being Bruce
and Colin Mair's Muiresk Northern Dancer, from the
family's 80-ewe flock at Turriff. Sired by the 14,000gns
Cowal Maverick, and out of a Craighead Hercules-sired
dam, he sold in a three-way split to the Campbell's
Cowal flock, at Drimsynie, Lochgoilhead; Allan Chisholm,
Wester Moy, Muir of Ord, Aberdeenshire; and David
McKerrow, Nochnary, Freuchie, Cupar.
 |
| Another at 11,000gns was
Strathbogie Nixon II (IJS07083) from James
Innes |
Matching that price was the pre-sale show champion,
Strathbogie Nixon II, from James Innes and shepherd,
Michael Leggat, Dunscroft, Huntly. Best for this
60-ewe flock was a son of the 14,000gns Eastfield
Merlin bought at Lanark last year with Milnbank.
Out of a Castlecairn Kung Foo Fighter daughter that
stood first at Turriff Show last year, he sold to
Allan Cullen, Craighead, Carluke, with Mr Innes retaining
a share.
 |
| Anglezark Nimrod (SSQ07750)
from Dr Symes sold for 9,000gns |
Tops for the 40-ewe Anglezarke flock owned by Dr
Steven Symes and his wife, Janet, was a 9000gns bid
for Anglezarke Nimrod, a son of the Irish breed record
holder, the 30,000gns Castleknowe Matchmaker. Out
of a Knock Impulse daughter, he sold jointly to the
Mair's Muiresk flock and the Knox family's Haddo
flock at Fyvie, Turriff.
 |
| Baltier Nijinski (FEB07769)
from Robert Forsyth also sold for 9,000gns |
Making the same money was Baltier Nijinski, from
Robert Forsyth's Whithorn-based flock. An ET son
of the 48,000gns Douganhill Jeronimo, he is out of
a Craighead Hercules-sired dam, bought from Castlecairn.
Buyers were Margaret Lyon, Milnbank, Turriff, and
James Innes, Dunscroft, Huntly.
 |
| Baltier Nailer (FEB07712)
again from Robert Forsyth sold for 8,000gns |
Mr Forsyth also collected 8000gns for Baltier Nailer,
a Goldies Matador son, out of a Turin-bred dam by
Haddo Kerfuffle, that was bought for 4000gns. Joint
buyers for that one were Archie and John MacGregor,
Allanfauld, Kilsyth, and John Gilmour and son, John,
Humeston, Maybole.
 |
| In
at 8,000gns was Penpark Nobleman (SJP07056)
from S & H Smiths Penpark
flock |
Outside the ring, Steve and Helen Smith, Penybryn,
Castle Caereinion, Welshpool, sold the best from
their Penparc flock at 8000gns. Penparc Nobleman,
a Springwell Jaguar son, sold to Matt and Craig Ridley,
Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, Wigton, with the Smiths
keeping a half share.
 |
| Doug Nesbitt sold Alwent
Nelson (NTA07380) for 7,000gns |
Alwent Nelson, from Doug Nesbitt, Alwent Cottage,
Winston, Darlington, was the first of two lambs to
reach 7000gns. Nelson, which stood fourth in his
class at the Great Yorkshire, is by the home-bred
sire Alwent Major Force and out of a Turin Hardy-sired
ewe that has previously produced sons to 4800gns
and 6000gns. He sold to J and J Campbell, Wedderlie,
Gordon, Berwickshire.
Hitting the same price later in the sale was Knock
Nugget, the best from Albert and George Howie, West
Knock, Stuartfield, Peterhead. Sired by Glenside
Mylord and out of a dam by Anglezark Krug, he sold
to Welsh buyers J and GY Davies, for the Aman flock,
at Pen-Yr Heol, Rhydaman, Sir Gaerfyrddyn.
 |
| Templand Nixon (GKT07640)
from Duncan Gill sold for 6,000gns |
Four lambs sold at the 6000gns price mark, the first
going early on in the sale from Duncan Gill's Fortrose-based
Templand flock. Selling to Jimmy Warnock, Watchknowe,
Sandilands, this was Templand Nixon, a son of the
9000gns Clinterty Las Vegas, out of a Knock Impulse
gimmer.
 |
| The second at 6,000gns was
Llangwm Noddy (JLI07007) from Iolo Prys Jones |
Welsh seller, Iolo Prys Jones collected the same
money for Llangwm Noddy, from his 100-ewe flock at
Corwen, Denbighshire. Sired by Cowal Monarch of the
Glen, a ram bought for 4200gns at Carlisle last year,
he is out of a Clynnog Joe Tex-sired dam that was
bought from Garngour at the Select Seven sale two
years ago. He was another to sell to Matt and Craig
Ridley's Haltcliffe flock.
 |
| Another at 6,000gns was
Millar’s Night Rider (VMG07369) from
Martin & Cyril Millar |
S Bothwell, Stocken Hall Farm Cottage, Stretton,
Oakham, paid 6000gns for Millar's Night Rider, from
Martin and Cyril Millar, Glenleary Road, Coleraine,
Northern Ireland. A son of Mellor Vale Masterpiece,
out of a Crailloch Galaxy-sired ewe, he stood breed
and inter-breed champion at Ballymoney Show earlier
this year.
A top for John Forsyth’s Maybole-based Glenside
flock was 6000gns for Glenside Nibscot, out of the
ewe that stood champion at the Highland and Royal
shows last year. Sired by the 39,000Euros Bailey's
Mega, he sold to K Hourston's Orkney-based Didcot
flock.
Robert Cockburn, Connachan, Crieff, and Kerr Jarvie,

another by the 30,000gns Castleknowe Matchmaker,
out of a dam by Douganhill Hero.
Selling for the same money, to the Campbell's Cowal
flock, was Thinacres Nugget, from Hugh Frame, Thinacres,
Quarter, Hamilton. Sired by Milnbank Maramba, bought
for 2000gns at the second Lanark sale last year,
and out of a ewe by Tartan Heart Throb, this one
stood first in his class at East Kilbride Show.
