English National Tops at 4,000gns for Glenside

By Lynsey Clark - The Scottish Farmer

Bluetongue restrictions resulted in fewer Scottish and Welsh buyers and sellers at the English National Texel Show and Sale at Worcester, and consequently, of the 128 offered, less than 100 ram lambs were sold through the ring.

It was however, one of the few Scottish breeders that made the long trip south, who sold the sale’s top priced lot at 4,000gns. That was achieved for the best from John Forsyth’s Glenside flock from Maybole, which had earlier been placed reserve overall champion at the show, by the judge, Andrew Clark of the Garngour flock from Lesmahagow. A son of the 3,000gns Midlock Nimrod, out of a dam by the 28,000gns Lanark champion Claybury Invador, this ram lamb sold to fellow consignor Charlie Boden, for his Sportsman’s flock.

Next in the ring for Glenside was one by Glenside Minstrel, a home-bred son of Castlecairn Keltic Star, which fetched 2,000gns, selling to SP and CP Williams, Great Wollascott, Shrewsbury. That one’s dam, a Muiresk Forever daughter, is out of the past Highland show champion Glenside Lulu.

Second top was a 3,100gns bid for one from Charlie Boden’s Stockport-based Sportsman’s flock. A son of last year’s purchase, the 28,000gns Castlecairn Nile God, out of a dam by Haltcliffe Jaguar, he sold to HS Ashley, Laburnham Lodge, Langrick.

First time seller, Christopher Riby, who runs the 55-ewe Stonehills flock with his father Geoff, at Low Stonehills, Fraisthorpe, East Yorkshire, enjoyed a successful sale debut, selling to 2,000gns and 1,700gns. Dearest of the two was Stonehills Ou-La-La, a son of the Carlisle bought Baltier Lexus, which earlier in the year stood second in its class at the Great Yorkshire. Out of a ewe by Durisdeer J-Lo, he sold to AJ Meredith, Hardwicke Farm, Stottesdon, Cleobury Mortimer.

Also hitting that price tag was the top shearling, sold late in the sale from Mrs Nicky Warnock, Tumble Tye, Hockley, Capel Le Farne, Kent. Tumble Tye Near Miss is by the Ettrick High Jinks son Craighead Kingfisher, and out of a Stonefieldhill Impressive-sired ewe. Buyer were GJ and JE Williams, Cwmpadest, Crai, Brecon.

Just behind, at 1,600gns, was the first prize shearling, Claybury Nadal, from Hannah and James Draper, Ensdon House, Montford, Shrewsbury. This son of Garngour Maestro is out of a Penstones-bred ewe that also produced the 14,000gns Claybury Jaguar. He sold to KF Moore, Thornborough Farm, Wythall.

Females top at 600gns twice:

Aubrey and Sue Andrews’ Miserden Flock from Stroud in Gloucestershire took the joint top price in the female ring with their Miserden Kracker daughter out of a homebred ewe going back to Cowal Encore. She had been placed second in the Royal Show Shearling Ewe Class in July. She sold at 600gns to W Davies, Maesmawr, Pontypool, Monmouthshire.

The second ewe to sell at 600gns was from Leominster based Vaughan Farms Ltd’s Kingsland Flock. She was sired by Alwent Major Force and out of a Haddo Jogger daughter, and she caught the eye of successful bidder DJ Watkins, Caenantmelyn Bungalow, Hay on Wye, Herefordshire.

A Loosebeare female from EW Quick of Crediton, Devon sold for 580gns. Sired by Scolton Lion King and also going back to Haddo Jogger, she sold to MF Balckham, Fox Bridge Stables, Market Drayton, Shropshire

Meanwhile another local enthusiast, WK & CA Martyn, from Lydney, Gloucester also sold their second prize Shearling Ewe from the Three Counties Show in June to the same buyer. By Glenside Metro and out of a Bettonfield Jackdaw daughter, she sold for 580gns to MF Balckham, Market Drayton, Shropshire.
