No stranger to the Texel show rings at the Royal Welsh, Heulwen
Thomas and her son Guto, from Anglesey, took yet another breed
championship.
Leading the way under judge David Chave, Somerset, was their
homebred shearling ewe. A first timer to the show season this
year, she is by Glanllyn Morgan out of a Bryn Garth ewe by Haddo
Jordan and is one of 120 pedigrees run under the Bryn Garth flock
alongside their 800-ewe commercial flock.
After judging Mr Chave, who runs 120 pedigree Texels under the
Peacehay prefix, said this ewe was an easy winner from the minute
she won her class. “She has great shape, is incredibly well fleshed
and is very stylish.
And the celebration continued for the Thomas family as they
also secured the reserve female and reserve overall championship
with their February 2008-born ewe by Annan Jewel out of a Bryn Garth ewe by Douganhill Jeronimo. Like the champion before her,
this was the first time shown for this year and both ewes will
likely make an appearance at Anglesey Show in August.
Taking the male championship was first time exhibitor Gareth
Jones, Denbeighshire, with his February 2008-born tup Bettonfield
Once More who was bought for £900 and is by Peacehay Johnny Walker out of a Bettonfield ewe by Craighead Investment. This is the
first time he has been shown and is one of 30 run under the Meifod prefix.
Standing reserve male champion was Colin Ponting, Oxfordshire,
with his March 2009-born shearling tup Millend Piece of Gold,
by Millend Off The Scale out of a Millend ewe by Castlecairn
Investment.
In the other classes, the Thomas family continued a strong run
of winning as they took the ram lamb class with one by Bryn Garth
Major Tom out of a homebred ewe by Cornerstone Isaac.
Leading the way in the ewe lamb class was G V Harwick and Son,
with a lamb by Racecourse Panache out of a homebred ewe by Penparc
Jaguar.
The winning group of three went to S I Lewis, Carmarthenshire,
with their team consisting of their older ram, second prize shearling
ram and sixth prize ewe lamb.
The Texel Society Annual Hog Roast, supported by the ladies
from the South Wales Club allowed for in excess of 130 members
to have an extremely social evening along with 30 members of
the Northern Irish Club, many visiting the RWAS for the very
first time. James Draper of the Claybury flock having judged
the “All Wales flocks” for 2010 presented the awards to finish
a very successful day. The Tuesday mornings Society reception
in conjunction with the South Wales Club proved popular.
