Smithfield

The Smithfield show saw a good turnout of Texels, with the purebred class for a pair of two wether or ewe lambs, being won by RJ Slade, with a combined pen weight of 88.5kgs. Second place went to AD & RMC Bishop with their pair weighing 86.0kgs, and in third position was Thomas C Whiteford whose lambs weighed 92.5kgs.

The crossbred section for a pen of two wether or ewe lambs, saw a pair of Texel x Beltex take the first prize and Champion of section title, for R&G Colgrave. Whilst S Clatworthy took second place and also Reserve Champion of section with Texel x’s. In third position was WA&AJ Windsor with Texel x Rouge de l’ouest.

The Butchers’ weight classes also saw Texels feature in the prizes, with RJ Slade winning three first prizes for his three pens of three Texel lambs. He also won Champion of section, weighing 39kgs live and 21kg dead.

The Texel butchers live class of two was also won by RJ Slade, weighing 44.5kgs live and then 24.5kgs dead when it was placed third. WA&AJ Windsor’s entry was placed first in the dead section and also took the Reserve Champion for live/dead purebred carcase in section, the weights were 46kgs live and 26kgs dead.

Royal Welsh Winter Fair

The pair of purebred Texel lambs, any weight class, was won by Mr AD Bishop, with Heulwen Owens in second place, and M&N Gibbons in third.

The next three classes for a pair of lambs weighing up to and including 73.5kg: 74kg – 79.5kg: and 80kg – 85.5kg inclusive, all saw Texel crosses from PJ Houldey in second place. He also took the Reserve Champion in the section with his first prize winning pair of Texel x lambs weighing 91kg – 100kg.

Whilst the pair of lambs weighing up to an including 73.5kg class saw Texels feature in third position with R&J Williams with their Dutch Texel x Beltex x.

G Hughes also took third position with is Beltex x Texel in the pair of lambs weighing 91kg – 100kgs.

Meanwhile in the “novice” pair of lambs class, WP&S Ellis took first prize with their Beltex x Dutch Texels, and Texels also featured in the third position with DG Davies’ Blue Texel x Toussin.

The Singles section; lamb weighing 9kg – 24kg dead weight saw WH Weaver taking two first places and a second and third, with this Beltex x Texel x, these included the Champion of the Section. Whilst PJ Houldey again featured, taking the Reserve Champion title with his first prize Texel x Beltex. WC&HM John took a first prize with their Dutch Texel x Texel. G&H Davies won a second place ticket and PJ Slade took a third.

The Pairs section; lambs weighing 18kg – 48kg combined dead weight, saw WH Weaver in first place again with his Beltex x Texel x, which was also awarded Champion of the section. C Owens took the blue ticket with his Beltex x Texel and Reserve Section Champion, and WC&HM John took third prize with his Texels.

The Texel Society also hosted their 30th Anniversary Carcase Competition at this show, with Wayne Randell of Pontypool as judge. The purebred lamb class, weighing 9kg – 24kg dead weight, saw OP&A Beresford clean up, taking the first three places, and Champion of the section.

The second class saw RJ Slade taking pole position and Reserve Champion of the section, with OP&A Beresford in second place, and Mr AD Bishop in third.

The National Primestock Show Bingley Hall, Stafford

Supreme Champion carcase in the sheep section was a Texel x from D&L Wadland, Valley View Farm, Aston Le Walls, Daventry.

The Reserve Champion carcase was a Beltex x Texel from D Weaver of Coverfields, Hanley Swan, Worcester.

Whilst in the live classes, the Texel breed also came out top, with the Supreme Championship title for a tremendous pair of Texels from O&A Beresford, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

The Scottish Winter Fair

At the Scottish Winter Fair, the Champion of the Live / Dead sheep section was Dutch Texel x Beltex lamb from Richard and Granville Colegrave, Guardswell, Inchture, Perthshire.

Messrs Colegrave, also lifted the Champion pen of Texels with their pair of ¾ Texels.

Andrew Morton, also won the reserve France Brown Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the Reserve Best Pen of Two Sheep, with his Texel x.
