The Texel breed enjoyed a hugely successful Royal Welsh Show, boasting the largest show of Texel sheep in Europe, and claiming the Reserve Champion of Champions. The prize went to a ‘massive ewe’ with tremendous scale.

The ewe, shown and bred by Nick Layton of Park Gate Farm, Lyonshall, Hereford, took the overall championship in the Texel classes on Monday. She was chosen by judge David Williams of Cricin Farm, Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, from a ‘tremendous show of sheep’.

Texel Sheep Society Chairman, Victor Chestnutt, described the entries as ‘a credit to the breed’. He said the majority were great commercial sheep which would do a fine job in today’s economic climate. He warned that post SFP only quality sheep such as these would pay.

“The judge David Williams went for sheep with plenty of commercial attributes, having great fleshing and super hind quarters”, he added. “It was the largest show of Texel sheep in Europe , with 335 sheep entered. The closest to that was 280 in Uruguay recently.

“The quality was good down through the classes with the tups being excellent. The reserve champion was an aged ram shown by very popular exhibitors, Glyn and Jeannette Williams of Cwmpadest, Crai, Brecon.”

Chief Executive Steven McLean said: “This has been a fantastic show of sheep, with some excellent animals. It was particularly encouraging to see so many young people showing here. It bodes well for our breed”.
