F.E.C. (WORM SAMPLING) 2009
Due to the increasing level of wormer resistance to the present
drug range (now including ivermectins) we feel that this is of
increasing relevance and importance to our ongoing breeding program
and hope that as many breeders as possible will take part.
We expect the cost will be £4.50 plus VAT per sample for 2009,
further information available soon. A discounted rate of £4 plus
VAT per sample is available for breeders to who wish to send in
samples in batches of 100 samples or more. the greatest benefit
is obtained from sampling the whole flock enabling Sire and Dam
data to be more accurately calculated. Please remember to only
sample after the last worming treatment has come to the end of
its cover period and that each sample pot is full (to ensure that
there is sufficient sample for analysis).
Previously Innovis have provided a free mob sample kit to each
breeder so that they can check that there is an average egg count
present before they send in individual samples (an average FEC
of at least 100epg is needed before it is worthwhile sending in
individual samples). We hope that this will help to save members
both time and money.
When sampling please allow up to one week for
postage and processing of the samples so that results can be incorporated
into the main B.L.U.P run. The laboratory cannot guarantee the
processing of any samples which arrive within 24 hours of the B.L.U.P
deadline. To order your sample kits, please notify Emma Riley at
emma@innovis-aber.org.uk or by phone on 01970 828236 stating how
many sheep you intend to test.
Each of the levy bodies have provided subsidies to breeders to
encourage the uptake of FEC EBVs. The subsidy provided has been
£2 per sample.
It is anticipated that Innovis will raise an invoice to the Society
which will be recharged to the member, less the subsidy. The Society
will then reclaim the subsidy from the levy board to ensure that
the member is fully supported, and reducing the amount of invoices
the levy board has to manage.
We hope that members will participate again this year and Emma
looks forward to receiving details from you.
